January 13th - Commodores Update

Published Fri 13 Jan 2023

Happy New Year, and welcome to 2023!

The warm weather has finally settled in, and we look forward to an active and successful second half of the season. Congratulations to those that competed in their class's National Championships. Congratulations also to the Learn2Sail participants who completed the course late last year. Please go out of your way to make them welcome around the club.

A special mention and congratulations to past member James Lanati (yes, Bruno's son) and his skipper Mark Krstic for winning the I14 National Title for the first time.

This Saturday (12/1), we are holding our Family and Friends day. This is an opportunity to show how fantastic our club and sport are to any family members or friends you think may be interested. So please bring someone along and take them for a sail or a SUP. You can use a Quest to take someone for a sail if that suits you. We intend for this to start at about 10 am. There will be a BBQ at midday, the briefing will be at 12:30 pm, and for now, the race will begin at 2 pm. The race will feature an Off The Beach start (or Le Man's start) and most likely involve a lap or two to Woollies buoy. The forecast for Frankston is for 32C. The wind is currently forecast to be 0 to 5 kts Northish in the morning. It should swing to SW and increase to about 10 knots for the afternoon. So it looks like a perfect day to bring someone to enjoy a day at the beach and some water activities.

The Frankston Waterfront Festival will be held over the weekend of 18/19th February. Our car park will be closed for the weekend and full of stalls again this year. We will be running our Discover Sailing days over both days that weekend. This event is significant for our relations with the public and Council, plus it's a pivotal opportunity to recruit more members. Please volunteer in some way to help us run this event if you can.

Easter is from Fri 7th to Mon 10th April this year. The Easter Regatta is again scheduled for that weekend at Lake Bullen Merri. This is an excellent regatta with entertaining sailing, camping, and socialising on the lakeside. Frankston YC is very well represented there and should be again this year. We will be offering the Regatta Management the use of Gloury again this year, so we may ask someone to drive it there.

The FYC AGM will be held on Sat 29th, April. Anyone interested in a position on the Committee for next year is encouraged to nominate when the time comes. If anyone is interested, please chat with the current occupant of that position or me. They will be pleased to talk to you.
